The city was originally established as an agricultural center and incorporated as a city in 1830. McHattie Park is home to The Witch's Hat Depot Museum and Historic Village, a historic village with six buildings: Washburn School, Queen Anne Depot, the Caboose, the Little Village Chapel, the Freight House, and the Gazebo. 


Residents may easily access the nearby Lake Island State Recreation Area, a 4,000-acre park along the Huron River with several miles of hiking and biking trails, a couple of small lakes, and the only hot air balloon launch area in a Michigan park.
